The Writer’s Guild of America strike may be the death knell for Sam and Dean Winchester. CW has announced that the final four episodes of Supernatural will be broadcast weekly, beginning January 31st 2008. After the final four have aired, there are no plans to show reruns of Supernatural.
Instead, “Reaper” will be taking the Thursday night timeslot. Reaper has three new episodes remaining, and is expected to re-run while the writer’s strike lingers.
The writer’s strike shows no sign of resolution. The fall season of 2008 will soon be affected, as there may be insufficient time left for scripting, filming and editing of new shows. This would affect new series as well as new episodes for returning shows.
Network executives doubt that current audiences will retain their interest over such a prolonged interruption. Supernatural is especially vunerable due to the serial nature of the program. Drawing in a new audience is always considered difficult with a progressive storyline. Supernatural is also more expensive to produce than a reality-based, low-budget program that doesn’t require elaborate special effects or sets.
For all these reasons, we may soon be looking at the last ride of Sam and Dean Winchester in the famous black Impala.
Sam and Dean have fought and survived ghosts, demons, vampires, cops, fellow hunters and assorted curses throughout their three-season run. It’s ironic and unspeakably sad to think that their destruction, and the end of Supernatural, would come at the hands of those who brought it all to life. The WGA strike is the one evil that the Winchester boys can’t defeat.
While no official word of the series cancellation has been announced, the writing, as they say, is on the wall.

In one of the bloodier episodes of the series, “Bedtime Stories” gives us dark, modern analogies of well-known fairy tales….as manifested by the angy spirit of a poisoned child. Loosely themed for Halloween, this show didn’t disappoint in the creep and cringe department. Blood spews in the first few minutes of the program, and the body count grows while Sam and Dean puzzle together the source of the strange killings.
The chuckle of the night happens when Sam first sees the possible connection between the freak, violent occurrences and the plots of known fairy tales. When he compares a particular scene to the story of Cinderella, Dean looks at him with distain and blurts, “How gay can you get ?” Stunned, Sam is lost for a comeback, and Dean quickly mutters “Don’t answer that.”
The running quandry of the third season - namely, how to save Dean from his demonic pact - was brought up almost unexpectedly in the final minutes of the episode. Sam goes so far as to summon the deal-making, femme fatale demon himself, in secret, to find a way to break the pact. The demon resists Sam’s threats, telling him that that the bargain is sealed no matter what happens to her personally. Sam seems to take the defeat with silent brooding….and suddenly he raises his demon-killing weapon and BLAM! Nails her.
This is the second time we’ve seen Sam blow somebody away with little thought. Granted, these are demons, but as some have proven to be informative - if untrustworthy - it’s surprising to see Sam blast the literal hell out of them on short notice. We’re getting the sinking feeling that in his desperation to save his brother, Sam will do anything, and become anything….and in the process, serve the very forces he stands against.
Will Sam become a cold killer before it’s all over? Will Dean be pissed off because Sam took the Impala without permission? Will Sam say something else that sounds gay? Will Dean conquer more lovers before his time is up and hell demands its balloon payment?
We’ll keep watching to find out!

The CW network swung the axe on Veronica Mars but gave a nod to Supernatural’s 3rd Season. This may have seemed an obvious decision to fans, but Supernatural is one of those shows that is either loved or hated - and therefore understood or dismissed - by anyone who has ever seen it.
Fan appetite for merchandise is one of the reasons that Supernatural is enjoying CW favor. With a rabidly-loyal fan base watching the Winchester brothers brace the unknown, the CW is hoping to see Supernatural ratings spike in the third season.
Meanwhile, we can enjoy the ride!
